TN Oto Society

The Tennessee Otolaryngology Society is a nonprofit professional organization dedicated to advancing the field of otolaryngology–head and neck surgery across the state of Tennessee. Founded to unite and support ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialists and affiliated medical providers, the Society serves as a collaborative network for physicians in academic medicine, private practice, and hospital-based settings.

The Society is committed to fostering meaningful connections among providers statewide, strengthening relationships between academic institutions and private practice groups, and promoting the highest standards of patient care. Through structured networking opportunities, interdisciplinary collaboration, and strategic partnerships, the Tennessee Otolaryngology Society aims to build a cohesive professional community that reflects the diverse practice environments within the state.

A central mission of the Society is to provide high-quality continuing medical education (CME) opportunities that support lifelong learning and clinical excellence. Annual meetings will bring together ENT providers from across Tennessee to share advancements in research, discuss best practices, and address emerging challenges in otolaryngology. In addition, the Society anticipates collaborative meetings and joint initiatives with neighboring state otolaryngology societies to strengthen regional partnerships and promote shared professional growth.

Through education, advocacy, and collaboration, the Tennessee Otolaryngology Society seeks to elevate the practice of otolaryngology throughout Tennessee and enhance the care delivered to the communities its members serve.

Advocacy at the Tennessee Otolaryngology Society

A core function of the Tennessee Otolaryngology Society (TOS) is serving as the unified professional voice for ear, nose, and throat specialists across Tennessee — particularly when it comes to ensuring patients have access to safe, effective, and evidence-based care.

The Society actively engages in health policy advocacy on behalf of its members and their patients, including direct communication with insurance carriers and medical policy committees. When payer policies create unnecessary barriers to established treatments, TOS steps in to challenge those determinations with clinical expertise and peer-reviewed evidence.

A recent example of this work is a formal letter submitted to the BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee Medical Policy Committee, requesting reconsideration of the insurer's blanket classification of radiofrequency (RF)-based treatments for nasal obstruction and chronic rhinitis as "investigational." Specifically, TOS advocated for coverage of temperature-controlled radiofrequency remodeling for nasal valve collapse (CPT 30469) and posterior nasal nerve ablation for chronic rhinitis — two procedures supported by a robust and growing body of clinical evidence, national society position statements, and favorable third-party technology assessments.

Through this type of advocacy, TOS works to ensure that insurance policy keeps pace with advances in otolaryngologic care, so that Tennessee patients are not denied access to treatments their physicians consider medically necessary and clinically proven.
